The Stargazer and his Cat

Spread the love

Escape he sought from the pain in that home,

Night after night thru the dark would he roam.

The crowing and roaring and yelling and strife,

Just was no way to live a good life.

Outside he escaped with the cat by his side,

Quite the pair they made as the walked the roads wide.

Away from that home and all grief it did yield,

Thru the night and the damp and into the fields.

To the stars were his dreams, the night sky his escape,

The dark and the calm, no yelling or hate.

He and the cat to the pond down would they go,

Beyond that was danger that waited below.

In late spring the lights of fireflies dotted the night,

And for a short while he felt joy instead dread fright.

At peace with the world and cat by his side,

At least for a while this man need not hide.

But a person can bear so much rack and pain,

Before peace fades away and life is hard rain.

Twas what happened to him that once happy soul,

Whose spirit was wrecked and peace of mind stole.

Bear it no longer one night he did flee,

Ran thru fields and the swamp and the water deeply.

Running towards his beloved stars to take him away,

What happened next to the man no one for sure could say.

Thru the cold and the rain and the dark and the fog,

Perhaps the poor man lost his life in the bog.

Perhaps a lone highwayman ended his life,

With the flick of a wrist and the end of a knife.

None can be sure, none like to say,

For the loss of a kind soul is quite a bitter day.

But perchance he did find, him and the cat,

A way to bypass all the trouble and that.

A way on wish, a way far away,

To hope on a star, to pray for new day.

A place that is calm, and peaceful, and bright,

Where again life is joy, and sweetness, and right.
